Benjamin Britten’s charming opera for all ages will return to the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, conducted by Music Director James Conlon. Two community performances will be presented free of charge for family audiences, featuring several hundred student and amateur performers along with professional soloists and musicians from LA Opera.Presented at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels (555 W. About the St. Matthew PassionBach's St. Matthew Passion, first performed in 1727, is considered by many to be the single greatest masterpiece of Western sacred music. Created to be performed in church during Holy Week before Easter, the Passion is ambitious in its scope and musical means, requiring two adult choruses plus a third children’s choir, two chamber orchestras with, ideally, two organs, and six vocal soloists. The profoundly moving story, taken from the Gospel of Matthew, relates the last few days in the life of Jesus. The chief storyteller is the Evangelist, a role for high tenor, and a baritone soloist sings the words of Jesus.

The other vocal soloists are heard in arias that express emotional reactions to the events of the story. SAH Archipedia tells the story of the United States through its buildings, landscapes, and cities. This freely available resource empowers the public with authoritative knowledge that deepens their understanding and appreciation of the built environment. McElfatrick expanded the building eastward to accommodate a taller main stage, second balcony, and space for other sources of revenue such as hotel rooms, office space, and restaurants. The presentation is a balletic interpretation of Bach's sacred masterpiece featuring the dancers of the Hamburg Ballet, one of the world's foremost ballet companies. John Neumeier, the artistic director and chief choreographer of the Hamburg Ballet, is the director, choreographer and designer of the production, which has won international acclaim since its premiere in Hamburg in 1981. One year after restoring connections to its roots as a downtown movie palace, the Rialto Center for the Arts at Georgia State University has announced successes from its first year of operation featuring the historic venue’s new Digital Cinema Projection (DCP) projector and larger Stewart cinema screen. The evening began with a welcome from managing director Danielle Varner who gave an update on the state of the theater. Varner cited "Olympic-sized pivoting" and innovation by the Springer's staff and board, along with the consummate support of the Springer's patrons for making it through the uncertainty of the pandemic.

These volunteers worked tirelessly to save the Springer from the Wrecking ball and worked to restore her to her full glory, thus becoming the original Board of Trustees for the Springer and founding Historic Columbus, sparking a new wave of historic preservation in Columbus. As time wore on, the building was used less frequently until the halls of the Springer were homes only to the ghosts. With the opening of the hotel, the Springer expanded as tourists traveled longer distances to attend performances. This growth revitalized the community and in 1901, FJ Springer completed a remodel of the theatre, to increase it’s capacity to over 1000 seats.
During her time as resident costume designer, at the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, she led a team of Springer staff members and volunteers to help construct over 3000 face masks using fabrics from Springer costumes to donate to Piedmont Regional Healthcare when they were in need of masks for their patients. Even in retirement, Dawson continues to help design costumes for local projects. When the Springer was built in 1871, it was the nicest theatre between New York and New Orleans, so it served as a venue where shows traveling from the Big Apple to the Big Easy could recoup some of their travel expenses. A 1964 restoration included stabilizing the main auditorium, ground-floor spaces, and a portion of the second floor. As it neared its centennial year, the opera house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and President Jimmy Carter named the building Georgia’s State Theater for its centennial. Seven years later the Springer Opera House was designated a National Historic Landmark. Several additional performances will be presented in other venues through the company's Off Grand and Connects initiatives. As early as 1915, Springer started showing motion pictures on a regular basis and the slow decline of theater began. The building remained a venue for both movies and live theater until the Depression, but by 1931 theater performances ceased, and the opera house tried to survive as movie house.

The interior of the theater is an elegant five-story space draped in honey-toned onyx and features 78 crystal light fixtures including three stunning chandeliers each made with 24,000 individual pieces of hand-polished crystal from Munich. In 1959 the Springer closed, and in the Spring of 1964, The Columbus Little Theater Opera House Trustees was formed to prevent its destruction. On October 6, 1965, The Little Theater's musical production of St. Elmo, based upon the Victorian novel by Columbus-born author, Augusta Evans Wilson, was presented amidst the Springer's restored Victorian splendor. She served as the Springer's full-time resident costume designer for three years before retiring in 2021.
